Introduction
I will spend some time discussing what I hope to present with this podcast and share a little bit about myself.
Episode 1 (part 1): The Motor outlaws of the Great depression- Origins
In the first part of episode 1, I will look at the origins of the infamous bandits and bank robbers of the early 1930's and the lawmen who hunted them. Everyone has heard of John Dillinger and Bonnie and Clyde but what about Alvin "Creepy" Karpis or Wilbur Underhill "the Tri State Terror", I will examine these motor bandits and the famous lawmen who pursued them. Lawmen like the newly empowered Bureau of Investigation's Melvin Purvis, Texas Ranger Frank Hamer and Oklahoma City Detective Delf "Jelly" Bryce, who was one of the deadliest lawman of that era. I will also explain the guns, gear and tactics use by these outlaws and how law enforcement adapted to combat these desperados.
ePISODE 1 (Part 2): THE MOTOR outlaws of the Great depression- Crime spree
Now that I have set the stage in part 1, the second part of episode 1 will look at America's greatest crime wave, 2 years of lawlessness that would forever change the country. From the infamous Kansas City Massacre to the Shootout at Little Bohemia we will join the Dillinger, Barrows, Barker/Karpis gangs, along with other outlaws, as they rob, kill and kidnap their way across the Mid West and West South Central states. And we will see how the slew of robberies, killings and headlines helped an ambitious bureaucrat named J. Edgar Hoover transform a small unheard of federal agency into the FBI we know today.
